10K Maniacs Plans First Release In 13 Years
Through the overwhelming response of its fans, 10K Maniacs has reached 50% of its projected PledgeMusic campaign support first week out. "We're so moved by our fan's passion for the band, and we're really enjoying being on PledgeMusic, it's so cool!" enthuses 10,000 Maniacs bassist Steven Gustafson. Fresh off a milestone 30th anniversary year that featured numerous sold out shows, the iconic alt-rock band is readying its first full-length in 13 years. The upcoming Music From The Motion Picture--to be released January 15, 2013--is a beautiful affirmation of the band's classic poetic lyrics with dreamy pop blend. To coincide with the album release the band will play special intimate shows in select cities in January and February.
10,000 Maniacs is one of rock's most critically acclaimed bands. The quintet's pop-conscious, literate and lush aesthetic helped reshape FM radio. Along with bands like R.E.M., U2, The Smiths, and The Police, 10,000 Maniacs is considered one of the primary architects of the college rock sound. The Jamestown, New York-born group first gained widespread recognition with 1987's In My Tribe (Elektra) which charted at #37-an impressive feat for a pioneering alternative group-and would go on to sell over 2 million copies. The record featured the hit singles "Hey Jack Kerouac," "Like The Weather," ""Don't Talk," and "What's The Matter Here?" Rolling Stone Magazine voted the album in the Top 100 releases of the decade. The band would sell 3 million copies in 1992 with the landmark Our Time In Eden (Elektra), bolstered by alt-rock radio mainstays like "These Are Days" and "Candy Everybody Wants." 10,000 Maniacs has the added distinction of launching the career of singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant, best known for her successful 1995 solo album Tigerlily (Elektra). 10,000 Maniacs currently features founding members Dennis Drew, Steven Gustafson and Jerry Augustyniak, with Jeff Erickson replacing lead guitarist Rob Buck who passed away in 2000. Fronting the band for nearly 20 years is Mary Ramsey.
