Singer&Musician presents:

The Power of LIVE!

In this special section we take a look at three aspects of taking full advantage of the power of live.

First, some very practical advice on making sure you are ready for the gig before you arrive at the venue.

Next, we look at extending the reach of your live shows (and massively increasing your fan base) by putting your gigs online.

Finally, we delve into a gigging area that was a big part of the income stream for many working bands but has become the nearly exclusive territory of DJs and tell you what it takes to reclaim receptions.

But.... Who's The Girl On The Cover?

Alexx Calise Visited the L2P Lounge

for and interview and profile

By Nort Johnson

Picking up a guitar at age 11 was not Alexx Calise’s first step into the musical sea of creativeness. She had been writing poetry her whole young life to that point. However, it was the guitar that unleashed a creative flow from her mind and fused words and melodies from her psyche into her music. Her music is a stew of urban-pop, electronica and aggressive hard alternative rock. Her debut album, Morning Pill, shows just how assertive a young female songstress can get. Her polished, sharp, lyrical wit stranded along with pounded bass lines and Faith No More-ish guitar cracks invites strong honed vocals that are sharp and edgy. Like a lost soul in a pool of blue fire and ice, her words spit out impressionable particles of life as she’s experienced it. She writes of past relationships, while under-toning and disguising political and social commentary in the process.

Not an easy thing for a writer to do.

Calise markets herself to a broad ranged audience. Never going too far but always going far enough. As she admits in her video single “Pull it (Bullet) from Morning Pill,” “If I had an Alexx Calise doll you’d better hide it from your son.” Her management works close with her on marketing but she says,  “I have 100% control on all final decisions.” That seems to be the Alexx Calise way in music, business and life in general. Calise has racked up over thirteen endorsements thus far. Her first was Daisy Rock Girl Guitars and she says. “Everyone at Daisy Rock is very cool to me. That experience has helped me gain other great endorsers.”

Some of her endorsers include. Gibson Guitars, Hughes & Kettner Amps, EV Microphones, Future Sonics ear worn monitors, Rocktron, GHS strings, Peavey, Shubb capos, Hercules Stands, Girls Rock guitar picks  and EMG Guitar Pickups. So how did she get so many endorsements? “You just have to ask!” She says laughing. “Musicians seem to be afraid to ask and I don’t know why?

Of course you have to have the talent and music to back it up. No one’s gonna give you free stuff. You just have to work for it.”

Her MySpace site has received 230426 views and has gained her 75025 friends to date. That is a bold statement for an artist in today’s 2.0 web world.

So how does Alexx see the future of the music world and independent artists?” It’s in video, television and films,” she replies. She’s been writin up in Guitar World Magazine, Blender Magazine, and the nationally distributed method book, How to Succeed as a Female Musician which included Lisa Loeb and The Donnas. Her music is getting extensive airplay on MTV and VH1. The video and single off of “Morning Pill”, "Pull It (Bullet)" from her debut album, is in heavy rotation in Australia and New Zealand. Not only that, but with a marketing flare not soon to burn out her fan club is aptly named The Calise Police. Calise is one little jagged pill to swallow!
