Mastering The Murk Of Stage Volume
There are few things more annoying than the wreck that can result from lack of control over stage volume in live performance. Just ask the sound guy (and whatever you do don’t piss him off), how difficult it is to make everyone happy in this arena and you’ve got the perfect description for the problem: volume is totally different depending on where you are standing and there are lots of competing opinions about it - the most important of those being the people who pay the bills.
The problem obviously gets worse as you wander into non-traditional playing situations. Sure - your local garage band rock club may be fine with your amp volumes set at 11 and your lead vocalists’ mic feeding back like a screaming banshee every five seconds, but it’s unlikely that a restaurant, church, casino, or theater is going to let you get away with that.
So Live2Play surveyed a bunch of working musicians for their best tips on how to deal with stage volume issues while still delivering a killer performance.
